In Japan, commercial mobile communication services of 5G will be launched by 2020, which are expected to support a wide range of new usages, including IoT (Internet of Things) applications, and ultra-reliable low-latency ones. This article revisits the history of mobile communications, and highlights the usage scenarios and the new capabilities of 5G, with the key enabling technologies. It also introduces a couple of field trials to prove the concept for new applications.
